Gardens by the Bay (pictured) received its largest corporate sponsorship to date, after OCBC Bank announced that it would be donating S$8 million to the waterfront gardens, partly to mark its 80th anniversary.
“OCBC Bank has always recognised that our success depends on the support of the community that we operate in. From the days of our founder, Mr Lee Kong Chian, we have believed in the principle of giving back,” said Samuel Tsien, OCBC’s Chief Executive.
“No matter how modern and urbanised a country is, there needs to be a balance of greenery in the midst of modern buildings, perhaps just like yin and yang. One gets a pleasing sense of peace and tranquillity. That is why I am delighted and looking forward to the opening of Gardens by the Bay in a couple of months’ time.”
The S$8 million sponsorship will be spread over the next 18 years and will be used to fund two projects — the OCBC Skyway and OCBC Light and Sound Show.
The OCBC Skyway is a 128-metre long aerial walkway suspended about 22 m above the ground, linking two Supertrees and with elevator access. It offers a panoramic view of the Gardens against the backdrop of the Marina Bay.
The other project is a light and shadow show at Supertree Grove and will start from 2 July as part of Gardens by the Bay’s opening programme.
“We congratulate OCBC Bank on their foresight in contributing towards these two key highlights in Gardens by the Bay,” said Kiat W Tan, CEO of Gardens by the Bay.
“What this garden is all about is to reach out to our young and to our adults, to explain to them the perils of global warming, as a consequence of what we’ve done to the planet.”
