Singaporeans and foreigners can now look forward to a new terminal at the Singapore Changi Airport in 2017 as works began yesterday for the construction of Terminal 4 (T4).

The ground breaking ceremony was attended by Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew.

The new terminal (pictured), which will be located at the site formerly occupied by the budget terminal, will come with “design and process innovations” to enhance passengers’ travel experience, operational efficiency and manpower productivity for airlines and airport agencies, Changi Airport Group (CAG) said.

T4 will comprise two-storey, 25-metre-high building with a gross floor area of 195,000 sqm. It will showcase a 300-metre-long Central Galleria which will separate the public and restricted zones. The terminal, designed by Singapore’s SAA Architects and UK architecture firm Benoy,  will also feature a visual-transparent concept which will provide clear visibility of the attractive offerings in the Transit Lounge from the Check-in hall.

In addition to the structural features, T4 will also see the extensive roll-out of a suite of fast and seamless travel (FAST) initiatives – the self-service and automated options will be offered at check-in, bag drop, immigration clearance and departure-gate boarding.

In a statement, CAG chief executive officer Lee Seow Hiang said: “We are introducing new breakthroughs that will enhance their travel experience and excite them at the same time.”

“With T4, we are rethinking travel, exploring how key operational functions can be designed differently to optimise process flow, interior space, as well as manpower resources… We look forward to welcoming passengers to T4 in 2017 with a new Changi Experience; one that will continue to be personalised, stress-free and positively surprising,” he added.
