In a bid to improve pedestrians’ experience in Jurong Gateway, the government has opened a 270-metre J Link pedestrian mall in Jurong.
Located between JCube and a row of shops at Block 135 Jurong Gateway Road, the mall in Jurong Gateway is one of the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s (URA) Environmental Improvement Project and forms part of the Housing Board’s Remaking Our Heartland (ROH) plans for the Jurong Lake area.
“J Link was a result of close partnership between the URA, NHB, HDB, and the local community such as the Jurong East Town Centre Merchant Association. The community came together, provided very valuable ideas and suggestions, and you can see that it has cumulated in a very beautiful public area,” said Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office Grace Fu.
Previously, people had to squeeze through a narrow and roofed walkway to get to the nearby HDB estates, MRT station and Lakeside. There was also no pedestrian path directly connected to the Jurong Regional Library before.
According to URA, with the completion of J Link, pedestrians can now “enjoy a smoother and more pleasant journey on foot from Jurong East MRT station to Lakeside where the current Science Centre is located.”
URA CEO, Ng Lang said: “J Link enhances the pedestrian’s experience in Jurong Lake District and is a wonderful addition to the area. We are happy that the local community and stakeholders are involved in the planning and design of J Link to make this a meaningful and relevant public space for the community to enjoy.”
Apart from the pedestrian mall, projects within Jurong Gateway are also linked with one another and to Jurong East MRT station via a network of elevated paths called J-Walk. Spanning 1.2 kilometres, this walkway on the second floor will also be connected to upcoming developments.
The government also plans to enhance the eco-friendly mobility options at Jurong Lake District by building an integrated transport hub, including new MRT lines. It will also upgrade existing rail lines, park connector and waterway networks in the area. Furthermore, they will create a comprehensive network of cycling paths winding throughout the district and nearby towns.
