City Development Limited’s (CDL) deputy chairman Kwek Leng Joo has passed away in his sleep following a heart attack on Monday (16 November), CDL confirmed in a press statement. He was 62.

Appointed as deputy chairman in February last year, the late Mr Kwek started was first appointed CDL’s director in 1980 and later on became managing director of the company in 1995.

Described by his colleagues as a dedicated advocate for corporate social responsibility (CSR) for over two decades, Mr Kwek spearheaded CDL’s corporate social responsibility and sustainability initiatives.

“His vision has established CDL’s reputation as a leading green building champion and a forerunner in CSR, raising the bar for Singapore’s real estate industry and driving change for the building sector,” CDL said in a statement, adding that Mr Kwek’s “pioneering green efforts for over 20 years have helped put CDL and Singapore on the global map of sustainability.”

Mr Kwek was the younger brother of billionaire and CDL’s executive chairman Kwek Leng Beng.

He was president of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry from 1993-1997 and 2001-2005. He was also an executive director of CDL subsidiary City e-Solutions Limited, and a non-executive director of Singapore-listed Hong Leong Finance Limited.
