International logistics company DHL Express on Thursday (5 March) unveiled its plans to build a S$140 million 24-hour express hub facility in Singapore by 2016.
Located within Changi Airfreight Centre at Singapore Changi Airport, DHL Express’ South Asia Hub will occupy a land area of 26,200 sq m and have a total floor area of 23,600 sq m – a size equivalent to 60 basketball courts.
Scheduled for completion in the first quarter of next year, the new facility will feature Singapore and South Asia’s first fully automated express parcel sorting and processing system. The 24-hour express hub facility will be able to handle 628 tonnes of cargo – three times its current capacity – and process up to 14,000 shipments per hour. This is DHL Express’ largest infrastructural project in Singapore to date.
According to DHL Express, the facility aims to deliver “top-notch productivity and operational efficiency to benefit customers with improved speed, reliability and flexibility.”
“The new facility is designed for the ability for us to get shipments in and out of the hub as fast as possible, so that we can unload from a plane, and get it into Singapore or out to a third country,” said Herbert Vongpusanachai, DHL Express senior vice president and managing director.
The unveiling ceremony was also attended by Minister of State for Trade and Industry Teo Ser Luck who said that despite strong regional competition and growing investments in logistics in recent years, the republic continues to be a key regional logistics and trading hub.
“The Government will also continue to support the growth of the logistics industry through encouraging technology adoption, and helping companies set up best-in-class facilities,” he said.
