The cost of staying in a four-star hotel there has become cheaper, according to a study conducted by TripAdvisor.
The travel website’s third annual TripIndex Room Service Report revealed that the republic ranked 11th most expensive place for four-star accommodations in 2015, down from 9th place last year.
The study compared the cost of a one-night stay as well as the price of some room service items. In Singapore, tourists spend S$264.35 on average to stay at a room for one night and another S$16.96 to dry-clean a shirt, the website said.
They also spend S$25.91 for a club sandwich, S$8.01 for a bottle of water, S$18.36 for a mini bottle of vodka, S$7.05 for a can of cola and S$6.70 for a packet of peanuts. In total, travellers spend S$347.34.
In comparison, the total for the top three most expensive places — New York, Zurich and London – stands at S$580.51, S$492.68 and S$465.20 respectively.
Although Singapore is significantly cheaper than the three aforementioned cities, it is still pricier than the four-star accommodations in other Southeast Asian countries. In fact, Jakarta (S$150.76), Kuala Lumpur (S$167.12), Hanoi and Bangkok (S$192.22) were among the best value destinations in the world.
Commenting on the results, Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s senior lecturer in tourism Dr Michael Chiam, said the greater affordability of four-star hotels in Singapore could be attributed to the declining room rates.
However, he added that the total number of hotel rooms has increased, while the influx of tourists has slowed down, leading to stiffer competition among hoteliers.
