Singapore has agreed to help Sri Lanka in the management and development of its infrastructure, and provide a generous grant to aid the island country in making an integrated masterplan, according to media reports.
In line with this, Temasek Foundation, the Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC) and the Singapore Cooperation Enterprise (SCE) have recently signed an agreement with the country’s Ministry of Urban Development, Water Supply and Drainage.
Supported by a S$430,068 grant from the Temasek Foundation, the partnership aims to help the Sri Lankan government in crafting an integrated master plan, with a focus on greening, water infrastructure, housing design and community building. Another objective is to help review the master plan and provide advice on government land sales.
The Singapore government will also share its expertisein urban development from a macro perspective in the two-year collaboration, while the CLC will hold a series of workshops to hone the knowledge and skills of 125 Sri Lankan officials from various ministries and municipal councils.
“Urban management is a challenge that many countries in Asia face today, with cities growing at a very fast pace. We hope this training will be useful in encouraging knowledge sharing between public officials from Singapore and Sri Lanka, and foster networks of cooperation between both countries,” said Temasek Foundation CEO Benedict Cheong in a media report.
“Singapore has built a reputation for being a sustainable and liveable city. But it has not been an easy journey. Through our research at the Centre for Liveable Cities, we have captured the knowledge and principles of Singapore’s urban development story and are happy to share our lessons learnt, with our counterparts and friends from Sri Lanka,” added Julian Goh, CLC’s Director for Capability Development.
