Singapore has clinched the top position across a broad range of indicators, making it the top Asia Pacific city in JLL’s Business of Cities’ Ranking.
In fact, the study showed that the city-state has surpassed Tokyo in six of the leading all-round indices to become the region’s leader in science, mobility, higher education, technology and internet connection.
Aside from overtaking the Japanese capital, the report revealed that Singapore is beginning to shake off its reputation for a lack of vibrancy among tourists and expatriates.
Chris Fossick, JLL’s Managing Director for Singapore and Southeast Asia, said: “The result of the survey confirms that Singapore has all the infrastructure needed to be an Asia Pacific headquarters for companies.”
“The fact that it has overtaken Tokyo is an indication of the openness of the Singapore economy, which has been able to feed on global best practices, implement them efficiently and integrate them effectively into Singapore,” he noted.
Regionally, the top cities are Singapore, followed by Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul and Sydney. Although the republic only secured the third spot globally behind New York and London, it was named the world’s most business-friendly city.
The research, which analysed more than 200 globally-recognised city performance studies, was conducted by JLL in partnership with The Business of Cities Group.
It collated the widest comparative research studies on city performance to date, analysing key data such as business and finance, economic growth, quality of life, and a city’s brand, reputation and influence.
“It has never been more important to understand city performance. The ability of cities to attract investment, manage their growth, and deliver quality of life will define the character and ultimately the success of what the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) calls the ‘metropolitan century’,” shared Greg Clark, Chairman of The Business of Cities and JLL’s Cities Research Centre.
