According to industry experts, Singapore can expect to see more data centres to be built in the city, further cementing the country’s position as Asia’s top data management and connectivity hub.
In fact, the republic now accounts for about 50 percent of total data centre capacity in the region, revealed the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA).
Channel NewsAsia reported recently that Digital Realty has forked out around S$200 million for its second data centre in Singapore, which has an area of around 177,000 sq ft.
This expansion aims to meet the rising demand for such facilities, said the New York-listed Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT). It also has set up its second facility in the republic due to citing good connectivity and vibrant tech ecosystem.
And as the number of data centres in Singapore is forecasted to grow, the authorities are coming up with ways to cut their huge power consumption.
Based on IDA data, the energy usage of Singapore’s 10 biggest data centre operators is roughly equal to that of 130,000 HDB households. As such the agency rolled out its Green Data Centre Innovation Programme last month to improve the industry’s overall energy efficiency.
“As more and more data centres establish themselves here in Singapore, clearly there will be greater demand for energy. So to fulfil this expanded need, we have to start implementing measures and policies so that energy consumption by the data centres is sustainable,” said Toh Chai Keong, Assistant Chief Executive of IDA’s Engineering & Technology Group.
