After receiving much criticism from social media users following the announcement of its new name 1 Sengkang Mall in December last year, Compass Point mall will instead be known as Compass One when it reopens in Q3 2016.
It is noted that the shopping centre was in the news previously when its owner decided to call it 1 Sengkang Mall following a naming contest on Social Media, with the winner awarded a S$1,000 cash prize.
However, many netizens were unimpressed with the name as it was too ‘simplistic’ and ‘boring’ while others urged the owners to stick keep the original name, Compass Point.
“So, we have put Compass back in the name. But we also wanted to stick with our original plan to give the mall a new name to reflect a fresh, lively and vibrant experience that is going to be a step up from its predecessor,” a spokesperson said.
Following the completion of its renovation since October 2015, Compass One will feature a bigger public library, over 50 new retailers, and new amenities like a children’s playground, said M&G Real Estate. The firm acquired the entire stake in the mall in February 2016 after buying the shares previously held by its partner Frasers Centrepoint.
In a recent statement, the landlord revealed that almost 90 percent of the mall’s retail space had been rented out ahead of its scheduled opening in the third quarter.
Although M&G Real Estate declined to reveal the new tenant mix, it said the space allotted to food and beverage (F&B) outlets have been increased from 20 percent previously to about 30 percent.
Furthermore, there was also no change in Compass One’s anchor tenants which include food court operator Kopitiam, supermarket chain Cold Storage and the Sengkang Public Library.
