Changi Airport’s Terminal 4 (T4) officially opened on Tuesday (31 October), handling a total of 20 arrival and departure flights that carried around 4,200 passengers during the entire day.
“After five years in the making, we are very happy to commence operations at T4,” said Changi Airport Group’s Executive Vice President for Airport Management, Tan Lye Teck.
The first airplane to arrive was Cathay Pacific flight CX659 from Hong Kong which landed at 5:40 am. Aside from receiving goodie bags and orchids, its passengers were warmly welcomed with a performance by local band Lorong Boys at the baggage belt.
Passengers on the maiden departure flight CX650 that flew to Hong Kong at 6:50 am also got local delicacies and took part in games and activities at the G19 boarding gate area.
Moreover, the 19 restaurants and 62 retail units in T4 started doing business. These comprise local and international brands, with about 25 percent of them making their first appearance in Changi Airport.
In particular, the terminal’s Heritage Zone features facades of historic shophouses and rows of F&B outlets. These serve traditional Singaporean breakfast and snacks like kopi, kaya toast and mee siam. There is even a ‘live’ prata station, where the Indian pancake is freshly made by a chef.
According to Tan, the first two airlines that have started operating in T4 are Cathay Pacific and Korean Air, while seven others will commence their operations progressively on 2-7 November.
“The new terminal will increase Changi Airport’s capacity by another 16 million passenger movements per annum (mppa), bringing the total to 82 mppa.”
“T4 is expected to handle about eight million passenger movements in its first year of operation,” he added.
