The burnt down market at Jurong West will be replaced by a $6.2 million two-storey complex that boasts both customer and elderly friendly features like better ventilation and non-slip tiles, reported Channel News Asia.
Dubbed Jurong Central Plaza, the new complex will have an eating house and wet market on the ground floor, which is comparable to the size of the previous market.
The complex will also have an Active Ageing Hub on the second storey which will offer various services to seniors ranging from daycare to basic health check-ups.
It will be located at the site of the former wet market, which had been torn down following the fire.
To be fully funded by the government, construction works at the complex began in mid-2017 and is set to be completed by the end of 2018.
Jurong GRC MP Ang Wei Neng described the new complex as an icon of Jurong West during the unveiling of its design on Sunday (17 December).
“The Jurong Central Plaza will be a place for residents to dine and shop, to meet and enjoy,” said Ang.
He also revealed that the neighbourhood at blocks 492 to 498 in Jurong West Street 41 is the first to be approved by HDB for shop owners to receive a facelift under its enhanced Revitalisation of Shops (ROS) programme.
Shops within the area will get a new vertical blind, awning and signboard.
