New funeral parlour complex to rise in Bidadari

The existing funeral parlours at the Mount Vernon Columbarium Complex will be redeveloped into a new funeral parlour complex in Bidadari estate, announced the Housing & Development Board (HDB) and the National Environment Agency (NEA) on Tuesday.

With construction works set to begin in Q2 2021, the new complex is expected to be completed in 2024.

The redevelopment is part of the “government’s efforts to meet the anticipated demand for after-death facilities and services as the population in Singapore ages”.

To occupy 1.1 hectares of the 7.1 hectares occupied by the existing Mount Vernon Columbarium Complex, the new funeral parlour complex will feature 12 funeral wake halls.

It will be sensitively integrated with the topography and surrounding landscape of Bidadari, to minimise impact to future residents living around the complex.

HDB and NEA will also consult the funeral parlour industry on the design concept for the new complex.

Meanwhile, M/s Singapore Casket Company Pte Ltd and M/s Mount Vernon Sanctuary Pte Ltd has been informed by NEA that the lease for their respective funeral parlours at Mount Vernon has been extended until September.

This is their third and final extension, said HDB and NEA.

Once the lease has expired, the existing funeral parlours “will be cleared together with the columbarium blocks as part of the proposed development of Bidadari estate”.
