Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong opened Singapore’s second integrated community hub on Sunday (4 February), reported the Straits Times.
Dubbed Heartbeat@Bedok, the development spans three football fields, meaning its gross floor area is only one-third of Our Tampines Hub’s, the first integrated community hub that opened last August. Despite the smaller size, it features a plethora of amenities.
As it houses various facilities all under one roof, the development facilitates the provision of government services and enables a more efficient land usage, said East Coast GRC MP Lee Yi Shyan.
“The land freed up by relocating amenities would make room for new housing and new parks. In a mature town like Bedok, we are hard-pressed to find any open space to build new flats for young families,” he said during the opening ceremony.
According to PM Lee, many of the facilities in Heartbeat@Bedok cater to the residents’ social and physical wellness as around 14 percent of Bedok Town’s 290,000 population are over the age of 65.
In particular, the ActiveSG East Bedok Sports Centre there features a gym, four swimming pools, six sheltered tennis courts and eight badminton courts. There are also over 30 retailers, including restaurants and sports specialty shops, as well as childcare and education centres.
Aside from housing the city-state’s second and largest Active Health Lab, it also features the reopened Bedok Polyclinic, a senior care centre, Kampong Chai Chee Community Club and the Bedok Public Library. These amenities have opened in stages since July 2017.
47-year-old housewife Lily Saeimaim, who has been staying in Bedok for eight years, is happy with the opening of Heartbeat@Bedok as her family can conveniently stay healthy.
“The facilities here have indoor areas, so we can use them even when it is raining. I now come here to play badminton thrice a week, and my husband uses the gym weekly as well. My 10-year-old son uses the swimming pool,” she added.
