Frasers Hospitality, a member of Frasers Property Group, said on Tuesday (31July) that it has teamed up with multi-awarded architect Kengo Kuma to design the first Capri by Fraser hotel in Japan.
Expected to open in 2020, the 190-room Capri by Fraser, Ginza / Tokyo targets millennial travellers with its vibrant communal spaces and hi-tech offerings, particularly its signature Spin & Play launderette, where guests can enjoy video games while waiting for the washing machines to finish cleaning their clothes.
Aside from leveraging Japan’s record-breaking tourism boom, the expansion into the country banks on the growing popularity of social apartments there.
Paying homage to Japan’s culture and craft, the hotel will feature Kuma’s contemporary interpretation of a vertical Zen garden and an outdoor forest within the heart of the flourishing Ginza district.
The property’s entrance will showcase an origami roof, which is a notable feature of the architect’s design. It will be made of wood, a material that has been utilised in many of Kuma’s iconic works like the National Stadium for the highly-anticipated 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
“Kengo Kuma’s visual and intelligent understanding of the movement of space is evident in his architectural designs and choice of unique materials. His understanding of the psyche of the millennial traveller, the mainstay of guests at all our Capri by Fraser hotel residences translates into social living spaces that captures the imagination,” said Frasers Hospitality’s CEO Choe Peng Sum.
“Together with Hirsch Bedner Associates, who have drawn inspiration from local Japanese elements like cranes and the ubiquitous bento box, guests can look forward to a unique design experience with social and personal spaces for every need. We hope our guests will enjoy the instagrammable and experiential ethos that is the Capri by Fraser brand,” he added.
Capri by Fraser, Ginza and the upcoming Fraser Suites Akasaka, which will also open by 2020, will join the group’s existing Fraser Residence Nankai in Osaka that opened in 2010.
Since its debut in 2012, Capri by Fraser has grown to become Frasers Hospitality’s fastest-growing brand with 16 properties with a total of over 3,500 rooms across 14 cities.
