Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC has partnered data centre provider Polymer Connected to build two data centre facilities in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Polymer Connected has purchased land at Jakarta Barat to build the campus, which will include 2.6MW Tier III and 26MW Tier IV data centres.
In a release, GIC noted that the facilities will “adopt a hyperscale model, to be leased on a large, long-term basis to wholesale clients”.
“Built to international design standards, the Jakarta Barat campus will be scalable, reliable and secure, and will be the first green Indonesian data centre to utilise Jakarta’s natural gas network to produce electricity,” it added.
Darren Hawkins, chief executive officer of Polymer Connected, told CNA that the firm’s tapping on gas network could lead to “the lowest carbon footprint for data centres in Indonesia” – which is key for clients with carbon footprint commitments to their shareholders.
He revealed that the Tier 3 facility is expected to come online in Q1 2020, while the other one may be operational by end-2020. Their opening could generate over 100 jobs based in Jakarta.
Both GIC and Polymer Connected declined to provide the amount they invested in the facilities.
Hawkins shared that while they do not have a data centre in Singapore, the company is planning to build such facilities within the region’s fast-moving markets such as Jakarta, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines.
“Our vision to provide our clients with a pan-Asian data network, whether that be using our own facilities or creating direct private connections to third party-run collocated facilities,” he said.
