The award is part of the city-state’s effort to support the use of technology in maintaining, managing and building its urban centres.
A total of $1.5 million has been awarded to eight technology firms to utilise digital means to help manage amenities and buildings within six industrial parks, reported The Straits Times.
According to Minister for Communications and Information S. Iswaran, the award is part of the city-state’s effort to support the use of technology in maintaining, managing and building its urban centres.
“As cities become denser as a result of rapid urbanisation, there are opportunities – and even a moral obligation – to transform them for the better through technology,” he said.
This could be in urban mobility, building design and maintenance or estate security, he added.
In fact, a market research firm expects global spending on smart cities for this year to hit $95.8 billion, with the Asia-Pacific region accounting for 40 percent of such spending.
Here in Singapore, Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) is offering funding to match technology companies with property developers to launch smart estate projects to build innovation and technology capabilities in solution providers as well as nurture talent, he said.
During IMDA’s first round of industry technology call, eight companies have been chosen to work with JTC and Ascendas-Singbridge in a multitude of areas, including unmanned retail stores, smart parking and landscape management.
The second round of the $14 million, three-year smart estate programme will see IMDA extending the trial to mixed developments of residential and commercial buildings managed by the Housing Board and Frasers Property.
“I would like to encourage all interested parties to apply for this tech call… It is only when we come together in partnership and collaboration, leveraging resources and insights, can we transform cities and the lives of the people who live and work in them,” Iswaran said.
