The Smart Urban Co-Innovation Lab, the first industry-led lab for smart cities solutions development in Southeast Asia, has opened in CapitaLand’s 5G enabled Singapore Science Park.
Initiated by CapitaLand, the lab is supported by Enterprise Singapore (ESG) and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA). It will bring together leaders in the smart cities space “to co-create and test innovations with local built environment and technology enterprises in a live environment”, said CapitaLand, ESG and IMDA in a joint release on Wednesday (28 October).
CapitaLand revealed that it has, along with industry partners, committed up to $10 million in the lab as starter for the development and deployment of smart cities solutions within Singapore and overseas.
It expects the lab, which is powered by 5G connectivity and the latest technologies, to benefit around 200 companies within the city-state in the next three years.
Situated at The Galen at Singapore Science Park, the lab will serve as a resource integrator of various ecosystem players – such as local technology startups, global corporate enterprises and system integrators – “to co-create solutions for smart cities, from ideation to testing to commercialisation”.
The collaborative model enables local and foreign companies to “exchange ideas, identify opportunities for new business models and innovations, as well as facilitate deployment of smart cities solutions”.
The lab will focus on six industry verticals – namely, advanced manufacturing, intelligent estates, digital wellness, sustainability, smart mobility and urban agriculture.
Currently, 30 industry players have committed to partnering local firms to co-innovate, test ideas within the lab and pilot trials at Singapore Science Park.
Among them are Amazon Web Services, Johnson Controls, Cisco Systems, MooVita, Microsoft, Schneider Electric, NavInfo DataTech, TPG Telecom, SPTel and Vizzio.AI.
“Our partners can potentially leverage CapitaLand’s significant scale by piloting their projects at our properties in Singapore and overseas,” said CapitaLand Group Senior Executive Director Manohar Khiatani.
He added that the Smart Urban Co-Innovation Lab is part of the company’s efforts to remain “at the forefront of technology developments so as to bring innovative and sustainable real estate products and services to our customers”.
IMDA Assistant Chief Executive Jane Lim said the lab reinforces the city-state’s strengths “as a deep innovation ecosystem where tech, industry and government work together to co-create and accelerate solutions for smart cities solutions”.
Enterprise Singapore Assistant Chief Executive Officer Eunice Koh noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has fast-tracked the demand for sustainable urban solutions which contribute to the building of safe and resilient cities.
“Through the Smart Urban Co-Innovation Lab, smart tech providers can work on innovative solutions that have the potential to change people’s lives for the better,” she said.
