The winning entries for the ‘Runway For Your Imagination’ ideas competition reimagined Paya Lebar Air Base (PLAB) and its nearby industrial estates as an agricultural park, a wooden city and a “fluid city” that weaves the future community with linear parkways.
Another proposal re-interprets the term “kampong spirit”, welcoming “people from all walks of life into a high-tech, self-sufficient new town of and for the future”.
Organised by the by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) with the Singapore Institute of Planners (SIP), and the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA), the ideas competition was launched in January, seeking ideas from the public on how to transform the PLAB site and its surrounding industrial estates into a sustainable and liveable new town.
In a release, URA noted that the winning entries, by design professionals and students, celebrated the area’s heritage as Singapore’s second international airport as well as advocated bold and innovative designs that addressed various challenges such as ecological sustainability, food resiliency and fostering community.
Meanwhile, students that took part in last year’s annual Challenge for the Urban and Built Environment (CUBE) workshop and competition also proposed ideas for the former airport buildings.
Outstanding awards were given to teams from Dunman High School, Temasek Junior College and Anderson Serangoon Junior College.
“The development of the PLAB site is a major long term undertaking, and offers us an excellent opportunity to involve diverse segments of the population to re-imagine how we can build a sustainable and delightful town that meets our future needs,” said URA Chief Executive Officer Lim Eng Hwee.
“Even in these challenging times, I’m encouraged by the well-thought-out proposals we received from our partners in the professional community and youths. These creative concepts and proposals will help us develop a compelling and inclusive vision for this future space.”
Members of the public can view the winning entries for the ‘Runway For Your Imagination’ and CUBE competitions on URA’s website from today till 2 December.
