Two hotels are set to rise in the former Joo Chiat Police Station, developer Katong Holdings announced yesterday.
With gross floor area of 25,000 sq m, the new complex will house Singapore’s first Indigo Hotel with 131 rooms and the 451-room Holiday Inn Express, which will be managed by international hotel chain, InterContinental Hotels Group.
Under this deal, which was also announced yesterday, the latter will provide a full array of services, such as consultancy on the hotels’ design and construction.
“With a plot of land this significant, we needed to find a suitable partner with the right brands to develop these hotels. IHG attracted us with their diverse portfolio of brands catering to different segments of travellers, but what won us over was their combined Hotel Indigo and Holiday Inn Express proposition which is vastly different from other proposals we received,” said Katong Holdings’ Director Leow Ban Leong.
Clarence Tan, IHG’s Senior Vice President for Development in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, added: “The opening of these two hotels in partnership with Katong Holdings will be significant milestones for our presence in Singapore. There is a great story to tell with the rich heritage of the Joo Chiat area, which makes it the perfect location for our first Hotel Indigo.”
Located in the Katong neighbourhood, the property is minutes’ drive from Changi Airport and near the upcoming Marine Parade metro station. Known officially as Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong and Holiday Inn Express Singapore Katong, both establishments are expected to open in 2016.
Earlier this year, the site was clinched by Katong Holding after it submitted the highest bid of S$352.8 million.
The company is a consortium of three Singapore-based developers and contractors, namely Asia Development, Master Contract Services and Keong Hong Construction.
As for hotel operator, IHG currently has six hotels in Singapore under four brands with over 2,200 rooms. Globally, there are 60 Hotel Indigo hotels, with 56 in the development pipeline.
