New eateries banned from 18 areas: URA

The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has added seven additional areas to the list of areas where new eateries are not allowed to be set up, the agencies announced in a circular released earlier this month.

The areas added to the list includes Jalan Riang, Kampong Glam, Kampong Bahru Road/Spottiswoode Park Road, Sembawang Road (from Mandai Road to Transit Road), Upper Paya Lebar Road; parts of Changi Road, including Jalan Eunos; and Bukit Timah Road, which brings the total number of areas on the list to 18.

“To prevent the existing parking and traffic problems from worsening, we will not be able to approve more eating houses in these areas. This is also to address the traffic and parking concerns from the residents there,” said URA’s CEO for Development Control Han Yong Hoe.

As for existing eateries there, the URA will renew their Temporary Permission (TP) as long as there is no breach of the agency’s rules and there are no major complaints on dis-amenity arising from their occupation of said space.

Despite the ban, new eateries can still be set up in these areas as long as they take over the space of another restaurant. The URA and LTA may also consider upcoming eateries if they are unlikely to cause traffic and other inconveniences, the circular noted.
