World's largest mall solar power plant launched in the Philippines

The world’s largest solar power system installed on the rooftop of a shopping mall has been launched earlier this week by Philippine property developer Robinsons Land Corp in Pampanga, Philippines.

The 2.88-megawatt solar array atop Robinsons Starmills (pictured) was inaugurated on Monday (30 May), and will offset up to 95 percent of daytime demand, Robinsons Land president Frederick Go said. This solar plant breaks existing records on such a renewable energy generator installed for a shopping mall’s own consumption.

According to Go, the system is expected to generate almost 4 million kilowatt-hours (kwh) of energy during its first full year of operation, which will cut annual carbon emissions equivalent to 2.25 million kg of carbon dioxide (CO2)—comparable to planting 100,000 trees or removing 5.5 million miles worth of vehicular carbon emissions.

“As a responsible corporate citizen, Robinsons Land is continuously looking for ways to adopt sustainable practices and minimise its carbon footprint by steadily shifting to the use of renewable energy,” Go said. He also added that the group’s move to install solar power facilities in all of its retail properties “demonstrates the company’s commitment to help protect the environment from the adverse effects of carbon emissions.”

Aside from the solar power system in Robinsons Starmills, the group also operates a 742-kilowatt peak solar power plants for Robinsons Angeles shopping mall. The system is calculated to yearly offset close to 600 metric tons of CO2 emissions.

The group also said it also plans operate new solar power system on its malls in other provinces in the Philippines including Tacloban and Bacolod. Once completed, Robinsons Land will have 10 malls with solar facilities with a total capacity of 12.5 MW and an annual yield of 14.6 million kilowatt-hours.
