Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Sunday (21 August) delivered his National Day Rally speech where he touched on some of the upcoming developments in Singapore in the coming years.
Mr Lee said Singapore’s western region will be transformed through the on-going development of the Jurong Lake District and upcoming Jurong Innovation District, among other projects.
The Prime Minister also noted on how the new Woodlands Regional Centre will be Singapore’s Northern Gateway, which will feature business spaces, housing and waterfront park.
Singapore’s east region will also “change dramatically” according to Mr Lee, with the upcoming developments such as Terminals 4 and 5 at Changi Airport, and the move of the Paya Lebar Airbase to Changi. He also mentioned the relocation of the PSA Ports at Tanjong Pagar and Pasir Panjang to Tuas which will become the megaport, Tuas Terminal.
In a statement in April, the government said Tuas Terminal will be developed in four phases over 30 years, with Phase 1 already in the works and scheduled to be completed by the early 2020s.
According to Mr Lee, the move of these ports will free up land to be developed into the Greater Southern Waterfront City, with 30km of waterfront – three times the size of Marina Bay.
The speech was abbreviated after PM Lee took ill half-way through the speech.
