The six-storey Century Square shopping mall in Tampines is set to undergo major renovation, marking its first large-scale revamp since it opened in 1995, reported TODAYonline.
As such, the 200,000 sq ft. shopping centre will close down in September, and the renovation works are expected to be completed by Q2 2018.
The makeover would renew its offerings and enhance the shopping experience, according to Tan Kee Yong, Managing Director of the shopping centre’s operator AsiaMalls Management.
Customers revealed that a major facelift of Century Square was long overdue, given that it’s the oldest of the three malls in the town centre. Besides its ageing facilities, there are also better offerings at its two rivals, Tampines 1 and Tampines Mall.
Some tenants out of the existing 125 stores even shared that their businesses have turned sluggish over the years.
Purity Haven, a retailer of aromatherapy products, is considering to shift to a pushcart at Tampines 1, which is also overseen by AsiaMalls. Its proprietor 57-year-old Tony Tan said his business has declined by 25 to 30% this year as the number of people visiting the mall has fallen.
Eyewear shop Universal Optical, one of the mall’s first occupants, noted that business has contracted by 10 to 20% in the past 10 years due to stiffer competition.
Nevertheless, its Director Stella Kok is in talks with the management and is hoping to return to its current ground-floor unit. “This (shop) is my (late father’s) baby … I’ll miss this place,” she said.
Meanwhile, two of Century Square’s anchor tenants — department store BHG and supermarket FairPrice Finest — didn’t confirm whether they will return to the mall after its major renovation is completed.
BHG Singapore Managing Director Katsuharu Inamoto said that the department store will close by end-July after operating for 10 years. FairPrice Finest, which has been in business since 2009, will remain open until 9 August.
Although AsiaMalls declined to divulge details regarding the revamp, it is anticipated to inform the public about its plans by August.
