Ocean Terminal (pictured), Hong Kong’s largest shopping mall, is being expanded to feature a free observation deck as well as a permanent customs and immigration facility for cruise passengers, reported the South China Morning Post.
Set to be completed by year-end, the five-storey extension to Ocean Terminal’s western end will include a free observation deck on each floor, providing the public a 270-degree view of Victoria Harbour.
The works will increase the two million sq ft of floor space at Harbour City, which is part of Ocean Terminal, by 100,000 sq ft.
Temporary customs facilities have also been erected for ships docking at the 51-year-old retail hub.
“There will also be a proper loading area for cruises,” said an Ocean Terminal spokeswoman.
She noted that tenants at the extension are not allowed to open shops as it would only be limited to restaurants and other dining facilities.
Strategically situated next to the Tsim Sha Tsui pier of Star Ferry, Ocean Terminal opened in March 1966, making it Asia’s first US-style shopping mall and the world’s first marine pier to be integrated with a shopping centre.
