The $1.7 billion Jewel Changi Airport is poised to open in H1 2019 as only 30 percent of the mixed-use development remains unfinished since construction started over three years ago, reported TODAYonline.
This was announced by its operator Changi Airport Group (CAG) on Tuesday (6 February).
Designed to combine an urban park and a marketplace catering to airline passengers, the massive project features an eye-catching dome-shaped exterior made of steel and glass.
With a gross floor area of 134,000 sq m, the 10-storey mega complex will contain about 300 businesses and F&B outlets spread across 90,000 sq m of retail space. A CAG spokesperson said they intend to reveal the brands that are set to occupy the premises.
Among Jewel’s major attractions is the 40m-high Rain Vortex, the world’s biggest indoor waterfall. It also features a five-storey indoor garden dubbed Forest Valley, filled with thousands of ferns, shrubs and trees.
At its highest level stands the Canopy Park, which houses the Petal Garden and Topiary Walk. The Petal Garden will showcase seasonal flowers, while the other attraction will have animal-shaped topiaries. Aside from housing eateries, Canopy Plaza will also come with an events space capable of accommodating about 1,000 people.
To get a bird’s-eye view of the entire complex, tourists will also be able to take a stroll on the walking and bouncing sky nets, which are hoisted about 30m above ground at its highest point.
For visitors attending the ongoing Singapore Airshow, which is being held until 11 February, they can try out the sky nets in advance, albeit on a smaller scale at CAG’s booth. Likewise, models of Jewel’s other attractions will also be displayed there.
