Jewel Changi Airport will be competing against the likes of Hong Kong West Kowloon Station, Turkey’s Istanbul Airport and the Barangaroo Ferry Wharf in Sydney under the category of Completed Buildings – Transport.
Jewel Changi Airport has been included in the shortlist of the 2019 World Architecture Festival, considered as the world’s largest architecture awards programme, reported Today Online.
The shortlist comprised 534 projects across 70 countries.
The leisure and retail complex, which opened in April to much fanfare, was placed under the category Completed Buildings – Transport.
The $1.7 billion complex joins eight other nominees, including the Hong Kong West Kowloon Station, Turkey’s Istanbul Airport and the Barangaroo Ferry Wharf in Sydney.
The festival organisers described the “eco-airport” as being centred around a 15,000 sq m indoor public garden that features a 40 m-high indoor waterfall and “3,000 trees and 100,000 shrubs from around the globe”.
Safdie Architects, the firm who designed Jewel and is behind the ArtScience Museum and the Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort, revealed that during thunderstorms, natural and recirculated rainwater will flow at over 10,000 gallons per minute, helping provide cooling as well as airflow within the landscaped environment. Significant amounts of rainwater is also collected to be re-used throughout the building.
“We have been inspired by the levels of innovation in this year’s entries, that show the incredible range of ways in which architects are responding to the global climate and biodiversity emergencies we face,” said Paul Finch, World Architecture Festival programme director.
The winners will be declared during the festival, which would be held in Amsterdam from 4 to 6 December.
