In a bid compete with e-commerce and stay relevant amidst the changing times, OneKM mall near Paya Lebar MRT Station has been renamed as KINEX, a lifestyle and community-centric shopping centre that encourages social interactions through its experiential offerings.
“With e-commerce and social media, retail spaces need to evolve to bring about unique experiences that consumers cannot find online. KINEX – a combination of kinetics and experience – aims to bring the community together through creating and collaborating with retailers on fresh experiential concepts to constantly captivate shoppers,” said Jesline Goh, senior general manager for asset management and marketing at UOL, the property owner.
OneKM’s rebranding into KINEX will see the addition of various lifestyle and community-based facilities such as Instagrammable walls and a 300m running track that circles the property’s exterior, and embodies the mall’s tagline, “Let’s Play”.
Among the mall’s key attractions is a first-of-its-kind indoor retail theme park that consists of different experiential zones each with its own distinct motif. It will be operated by Invade, the brains behind art haven Mox and the company that organised some of Singapore’s most-visited flea markets. The theme park – which will feature interesting brands, trendy workshops, events and a café – is anticipated to open by Q1 2019.
“We are thrilled to announce a new-to-market Smart Retail Playground concept that we are launching in collaboration with KINEX. Invade has built a diverse retail community over the past eight years and we are confident of creating another community at KINEX,” said Invade CEO Kent Teo.
KINEX will also house a permanent pop-up retail space, where products and services are updated regularly. Offerings include eco-friendly and socially-conscious products by The Green Collective SG as well as experiential workshops, and this is expected to open by November 2018.
Moreover, the mall will house new F&B outlets by September. These include popular Hollywood fast casual burger chain Fatburger and Buffalo’s Express, which is known for its chicken wings.
KINEX will also feature well-known local hawkers run by young Singaporeans like Two Wings, which cooks a secret 40-year-old recipe, and Fishball Story, one of the few hawker stalls that bagged the Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2016.
The mall’s revamp is expected to be completed by year-end. During the renovation, existing tenants like supermarket Cold Storage, Beauty in The Pot hotpot restaurant, health food chain Haakon Superfoods & Juice and mixed martial arts school EVOLVE MMA will continue to serve clients as usual.
