The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) teamed up with the academic community and other government agencies to launch the masterplan for Punggol Digital District (PDD) on Sunday (21 January).
“Our plan is to capitalise on future trends and the key assets in each area to develop highly integrated and inclusive spaces to live, work, play and learn,” said URA’s chief executive Lim Eng Hwee during the unveiling of the masterplan at Waterway Point.
Industrial landlord JTC revealed that the district will be developed progressively, with construction set to start this year.
“PDD will be the first district to adopt a one integrated masterplan approach that brings together a business park, a university and community facilities,” noted JTC’s chief executive officer Ng Lang.
In particular, the facilities in the business park will house key growth sectors in the digital economy, like Internet of Things (IoT) and cyber security, leading to the creation of about 28,000 jobs.
The district will also house a new campus for the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). Being located close to JTC’s business park is expected to result in the cross-fertilisation of knowledge and promote closer collaboration between students, faculty and industry professionals.
Given that PDD is designated as an Enterprise District, different land uses can be co-located there. This means industrial buildings can house SIT’s research labs and learning facilities, while the SIT campus can also host industry R&D facilities and start-up spaces. This set-up is anticipated to foster greater synergies between businesses and the academic community to create and pilot new ideas and innovations.
The exhibit of PDD’s masterplan is being held at The Plaza in Waterway Point until 28 January. Another showcase will be conducted at The URA Centre from 3 to 15 February. Admission is free.
